Mutabaruka among Jamaican Elite group of Entertainers – Lauded with “Order of Distinction”

Written by on May 11, 2017

The social media realm went into a frenzy on October 17, 2016 when persons from the entertainment and arts fields in Jamaica were awarded Jamaica’s highest honours.  The 2016 National Honours and Awards Ceremony took place at Kings House.

Mutabaruka, along with the president of VP Records Chris Chin, sculptors Cecil Cooper and Basil Watson received the Order of Distinction (OD), Commander Class, Jamaicas 6th highest honour!

It’s fair to say MUTABARUKA (borned Allan Hope) became apart of our core consciousness  in 1981 when the barefooted unknown dub poet took to the  Reggae Sunsplash stage. Without a doubt, his likes has never been seen.. he chanted pieces like Witeman Country and Every Time A Ear De Sound …. A star was realized at that given moment and time! Mutabaruka through his poetry and presentation on Irie FM radio programming  (Cutting Edge & Stepping Razor),  has since become the “voice of a nation” … His bold Revolutionary, socially responsible, potent utterances helped to forge an entirely new genre of music, dub/rhythm poetry!

The 64 years old recognized the power of words since his teenage years growing up Rae Town, Jamaica. Listening to civil rights leaders such as Malcolm X during The Black Power movement in the 6os, help to inform his  aspirations.

His bio reveals Muta apprenticed as an electrician, and took a job at the Jamaican Telephone Company after high school. He was already writing, however, and in 1971 he quit his job to pursue his craft full-time. He moved away from the hustle and bustle of Kingston out to the quiet of the Potosi hills, in the parish of Saint James. Not long after, one of his poems was accepted by Swing magazine and from that point on, they would regularly publish his work.

Fast Track October 17, 2016, the works of Jamaica’s most influential dub poet and civil-rights activist is recognized; Mutabaruka has been lauded with Order of Distinction -Commander Class!

Congratulations  are in Order!
